Chennai Super Kings crowned IPL 4 champions

Chennai: Defending champions Chennai Super Kings emerged winners in the final of IPL-4 after they defeated Bangalore Royal Challengers by 58 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

The biggest blow for Bangalore came in the very first over, when R Ashwin sent danger-man Chris Gayle back to pavilion. Ashwin was Chennai`s lethal weapon against the Jamaican in the last game too.

As the Bangalore batsmen were struggling to find momentum in their chase, Ashwin and Jakati played havoc on them. The only worthwhile performance came in the form of Virat Kohli, who scored 35 off 32 balls. He showed some resistance while wickets fell at a regular interval in his team.

Earlier, a record partnership between Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay powered the defending champions, putting up a huge total of 205 before Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The opening pair of Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay took extreme care to give Chennai a decent start in the final match of IPL-4. They kept the scoreboard ticking with singles. Though it was Vijay who stole the limelight with 95 runs off 52 balls, he was ably supported by Mike Hussey as they put up 159 runs in the opening wicket -- a record first wicket stand in all IPL games.

Vijay missed out on a century when he was caught by Daniel Vettori off Sreenath Aravind`s bowling. Hussey, too, played his role perfectly well before he was caught at long-on by Chris Gayle. He departed scoring 63 off 45 balls. The pair gave Chennai the much needed momentum. The first six of the innings came from Vijay off Aravind at the end of the second over. Soon, Hussey followed suit with a six, over deep backward square leg off Zaheer Khan. Those massive hits set the pace for Chennai to a glorious win.

Earlier, Chennai Super Kings` skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chennai retained the same eleven for the sixth time in a row to set a new IPL record for the maximum number of successive games without a replacement.

Chennai: M Vijay, MEK Hussey, SK Raina, MS Dhoni*†, JA Morkel, S Badrinath, DJ Bravo, WP Saha, R Ashwin, DE Bollinger, SB Jakati.

Bangalore: CH Gayle, MA Agarwal, V Kohli, AB de Villiers†, SS Tiwary, LA Pomersbach, DL Vettori*, S Aravind, A Mithun, Z Khan, J Syed Mohammad.

IPL 4 RCB crush MI; set final against Super Kings

Chennai: Chris Gayle’s explosive innings set up the platform for a sparkling entry into IPL 4 final for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as they beat Mumbai Indians by 43 runs.

After posting a mammoth total of 185/4, Challengers kept a tight bowling leash on the opposition to set the mouth watering final match. Mumbai Indians were off to a rickety start as the top order went with 68 runs on the board, leaving the steep task of scoring more than ten an over to the less explosive batsmen.

It could not be as wickets tumbled at regular intervals for the Mumbai outfit and skipper Vettori (3/19) led by example to take his side in the final against defending champions Chennai.

Sachin Tendulkar (40) was good in his approach but he was stumped by AB de Villiers off Syed Mohammad’s turner. Aiden Blizzard (10) and Harbhajan Singh (13) could not make significant damage to help the cause.

In the first half, AB de Villiers (21*) had to keep it going after a solid platform was set for a big total by the openers. Pomersbach was the recipient of a shock out when Malinga plucked one out of thin air to see his back in the pavilion. Earlier, Virat Kohli was quick to fall at a score of eight runs while the scorecard had gone past the 150-run mark.

Gayle had made his claim to be the most dangerous batsman of the tournament with a massive 27-run first over, the most expensive opening over in IPL history to set the tempo for the high octane eliminator clash.

Riding high on IPL 4’s fastest fifty, Chris Gayle powered RCB post 100/0 at the end of 9 overs, giving headache to Sachin Tendulkar’s outfit that ran out of options against the onslaught of runs.

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Sachin Tendulkar(c), Aiden Blizzard, Ambati Rayudu(w), Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, James Franklin, Rajagopal Sathish, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Munaf Patel, Abu Nechim

IPL: Mumbai Indians crush Knight Riders

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians lived up to the reputation of being a gargantuan force at home, beating Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in the IPL elimination match.

Mumbai also qualified for Champions League T20 tournament with the victory and would also advance to the next eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Aiden Blizzard (51) was the first Mumbai Indian star to fall as he was caught in the deep by Iqbal Abdulla as the scorecard read 81/1 (7.5 Ovs). Soon after, Rohit Sharma was run out without facing a delivery due to poor running.

Mumbai had come out all guns blazing as the duo of Blizzard and Tendulkar slammed 71 runs in the first seven overs to take the opposition to the task. The former was particularly explosive as he slammed his fifty off 29 deliveries.

Shakib Al Hasan was good in his approach and Kallis was economical but the bowlers overall could not lift the game after being given an ordinary total to defend.

In the first half of the eliminator, Ryan ten Doeschate (70*) stood firm in times of adversity and helped Kolkata Knight Riders post 147/7 after a terrible crash of the batting order despite a batting friendly track.

Barring the mini cameos by Yusuf Pathan (26) and Shakib Al Hasan (26), none of the Riders rode the turf at Wankhede as Munaf Patel (3-27) tore through the batsmen, well supported by Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh.

Tragedy struck in full force as the top order crumbled early, starting with opener Jacques Kallis who was caught off Munaf’s delivery at a score of 7. Then the wicket of skipper Gautam Gambhir (4) and the subsequent fall of Shreevats Goswami (0) in the next over opened the floodgates.

The initial assistance by the pitch was used to the fullest by the Mumbai bowlers and the three quick wickets were a testimony to it. Yusuf Pathan and Manoj Tiwary were the Knights who had the tough task of building a big total on their hands.

Tiwari however, could not stand-up to the task and fell to Kulkarni at a score of four runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Jacques Kallis, Shreevats Goswami(w), Gautam Gambhir(c), Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Ryan ten Doeschate, Shakib Al Hasan, Rajat Bhatia, Brett Lee, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Iqbal Abdulla

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Sachin Tendulkar(c), Aiden Blizzard, Ambati Rayudu(w), Rohit Sharma, James Franklin, Kieron Pollard, Tirumalsetti Suman, Dhawal Kulkarni, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Munaf Patel
